Love and the Kingswood

Like many of us, Harley Breen’s first love was not some high school goddess or god, but rather a seen-better-days metal road beast.
breen.jpgIn Australia, where to live is to drive, what you drive is closely linked to your identity.
Most people of a certain age remember the old Holden versus Ford days, where strict allegiance had to be paid to one or the other.
And those who started driving during the 60s, 70s and 80s have probably endured at least one doomed love affair with a rattly old beast that was less than reliable.
These days there’s a bit more choice on the road, and most of the kids are driving younger, more glamorous vehicles, which means they miss out on the challenge of heading down the road not knowing whether the car will make it to their destination.
The Kingswood and I is a stand-up comedy story about Harley’s first true love, a clapped-out 1971 HQ Holden Kingswood.
If you have ever broken down, run out of fuel, been pulled over or formed a bond with your car that defied understanding, this show is not to be missed.
Described as one of Australia’s most natural comic talents, Harley Breen was last seen in Margaret River at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.
Breen has made the most of his screwy charisma and flair for storytelling, headlining shows throughout Australia and internationally, including on the London Jongleurs circuit and in South East Asia.
The Age describes him as “a hilarious break from stereotypes, very funny.”
Tickets are $35 Adult, $30 Friend and for Groups of 10 booked in one transaction.
The performance will be at 8pm on Wednesday 19 September.

Bravura Burlesque!

burlesque.jpgIntoxicating, seductive, rapturous and sultry are just a few of the superlatives being lavished on Caravan Burlesque, a travelling emporium offering a heady cocktail blended from the elements of Parisian nightlife, Australian vaudeville, wit and sizzle!

Audiences are invited to ‘dress to burlesque’ for this extravaganza, coming to Margaret River at 8pm on Thursday 9 August.

Bar opens at 7pm for drinks and nibbles, no BYO.

The Cultural Centre will be transformed into a sumptuous salon, with velvet drapes and satin tablecloths, where you will be swept up in Ethiopian dance and sultry songs by underdressed sirens, whip-cracking dames, Bollywood love gods and gothic divas.

From the creators of the multi-award winning The Burlesque Hour, Finucane & Smith, Caravan Burlesque is a transformative experience, heating up the wilds of a Margaret River winter in ways with which nothing else can compete.

Hot, hot, hot and full of stars, the show arises from a wild mix of heritages and influences, drawing on Australia’s long history of feted and infamous tours of international music hall, burlesque and variety stars throughout the antipodes – the tents and canvas palaces bringing fly by night glamour to the regions then departing, leaving behind only a few sequins and feathers.

Come with friends, dress to the nines and prepare for a sumptuous night that will challenge you, make you laugh, clap, gasp and even dance.

The Times (London) called Caravan Burlesque “outrageous and unforgettable”, while Melbourne’s Sunday Age described the show as “seductive and bursting at the seams with monstrous talent”.

Caravan Burlesque tickets, for unreserved salon seating, are $35 Adult and $30 Friend.
Book online at www.artsmargaretriver.com or phone 9758 7316.
