The
Swan Valley, on Perth’s outer metropolitan doorstep, is the
birth place of fine wine in Western Australia, commencing, with primarily
fortified wines, over 150 years ago.
Today those early pioneers would recognise
the rich alluvial river bank soils and perhaps a few gnarly spur pruned
vines, however not much else. In the past 10 years the ‘Valley’ has
been transformed from an historical urban oasis to a commercial food and
wine tourism precinct, a great deal of it parachuted in from afar to cash
in on the seething weekend ‘swim through’ masses.
The Good News is that the ‘Real’ Valley still exists and my
tour takes you to meet the old time characters and taste their bold regional
vinous interpretations; Standout Shiraz that is ripe, yet rustic with earthy,
savoury/leathery characters that in the right hands is one of Western Australia’s
great drinks and crisp and crunchy Verdelho, a classic international variety
that reigns supreme in the warm dry harvest conditions experienced in the
Swan.
From dry full flavoured styles to unctuous lush fortifieds (to rival
Rutherglen, Victoria) the ‘Valley’ is a true Oz vinous marvel.........this
tour will meander through the small ‘sheddist’ producers, taking
in a ‘progressive’ styled extended lunch (eg; fresh daily picked
asparagus, escargot, etc.)
$225.00/person (based on 2, all tastings, lunch and Perth Hotel transfers)
