Karridale Primary School
Celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2003, Karridale Primary School is the oldest school on the Cape, established in 1883.
The school has been at its present location since the 1920s and has retained
its timber school buildings and gorgeous old world charm. Following the devastating
bushfires of 1961 that destroyed old Karridale, the Community Hall was relocated
adjacent to the school, and is used to this day for both teaching purposes
and school functions.
Karridale Primary School is situated on Bussell Highway, in a picturesque rural setting, 13 km north of Augusta and 2 km south of the Karridale Crossroads, with a school bus servicing the locality. In 2005 the public school has 80 students enrolled, consisting of 20 pre-primary and 60 primary students.
Karridale Primary School’s mission is “to develop individuals whose independence, skills and attitudes will enable them to contribute, to their full potential, in a complex and changing society.”
The school specialises in Visual Arts, Health and Physical Education and has excellent facilities including two tennis courts, a large oval with views to a beautiful dam, a volleyball court, cricket pitch, basketball court and two big outdoor play equipment areas.
It takes
part in the interschool sporting competition each year with Augusta Primary
School, Nyindamurra Family School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School
and Cowaramup Primary School.
Karridale Primary School’s teaching program includes Italian language studies, music tuition, Information Technology and in-term swimming lessons at Margaret River Aquatic Centre.
The ethos of the school is “to provide an inclusive education for all students, in a safe, caring and interesting environment so that students can become adaptable and participating members of the community.”
A staff member was a finalist in the Premier’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2004. The school was a runner up in two District Awards for Excellence in 2003 and was awarded a Certificate of Commendation in the State Health and Wellbeing Awards in 2002, in the category of Organisation, Ethos and Environment.
