Margaret River Montessori School

Margaret River Montessori School’s vision is “to provide the Montessori method of individualised education, focusing on respect for the child which facilitates a love of learning, confidence, independence, self-discipline, motivation and respect for all.”

The school opened in 1995, situated 15 minutes walk from the town centre, and provides a gentle learning environment with peaceful aesthetics created by native gardens, natural timbers, earthy tones and open spaces.

It is mandatory that all WA government, independent, and Catholic schools achieve universal learning outcomes for students, incorporating literacy and numeracy benchmarks, and therefore all schools on the Cape incorporate the Curriculum Council’s Curriculum Framework, yet employ different philosophies, teaching methods and programs to achieve best practice outcomes.

Montessori education was developed by Maria Montessori, with a philosophy that children teach themselves, and originated in Rome in 1907. At Montessori schools children progress through self directed learning, at their own rate, which occurs in an environment of cooperation and guidance that encourages the development of ethics, morals and virtues.

Margaret River Montessori School’s mission is “for our children to reach their full potential” and the school maintains a code of ethics that values the rights and responsibilities of parents, teachers and children.

Montessori education begins at age three with children enrolled gradually according to their individual development. Each classroom has unique Montessori resources that encourage continuity and exploration, with older children assisting Montessori trained teachers in providing mentorship to younger children.

In 2007 the Margaret River Montessori School has 74 students  with new 3-year-old students entering the School throughout the year. Students are divided over four classrooms focusing on unique developmental stages, comprising upper and middle primary and two junior primary classes. The school has three specialty teachers in the areas of Japanese language, Art, Music and Drama.

The school celebrates annual World Harmony Day with a Japanese Kaigi (gathering) incorporating children dressing up in international costumes, special cultural performances, and a shared school lunch featuring global cuisine.

Margaret River Montessori School takes part in Sunnies for Sight Day every year, a national fundraising event with 50 percent of student’s gold coin donations funding eye care projects in the developing world.
