Margaret River Primary School
Margaret River Primary School (MRPS) was founded in the late 1920s and today is located on the corner of Forrest Road and Bussell Highway, in the heart of town and across the road from Margaret River Senior High School. MRPS is the largest primary school in the Shire and has grown into a class of its own.
In 2005 MRPS has a student population of 456 primary and 60 pre-primary
students while the Community Kindergarten, located adjacent to and administered
by the school in cooperation with a Management Committee, has 59 children
enrolled.
The purpose of MRPS is “to create a positive learning environment in which children are given the opportunity, assistance and support to achieve their potential intellectually, personally and socially, through the encouragement of effort, improvement and excellence.”
Under the guidance of Paul Bradstreet, the Principal of 15 years, MRPS has developed a range of inventive and unique programs that have been adopted by schools both in and outside the Shire and won more awards than there is room to display them!
MRPS has developed an innovative teaching system of ‘Fusion Planning’ which provides a framework for designing highly effective Inquiry Learning programs in which students define guidelines for quality and excellence, continually measuring their own progress. The success of the system in achieving beyond best practice outcomes has inspired 48 South-West and metropolitan based schools to visit MRPS during the past 14 months to find out more.
The
school provides an Emotional Literacy (EQ) Program that teaches children
how to develop and practice healthy relationships. The Program won the Celebrating
Excellence Award for Inquiry Based Learning in 2003 and community support
for the Program affords students access to a counsellor four days per week.
MRPS has 31 teachers, including specialist teachers in Music, Art, Physical Education and Indonesian, and offers a diverse curriculum focusing on Information and Communications Technology, with 181 networked student computers averaging eight per room. The syllabus incorporates Indonesian LOTE (Languages other than English) and Cultural studies and the school’s Technology and Enterprise program encourages the design and manufacture of a wide range of products, with go-carts a popular choice each year.
MRPS offers music tuition in flute, electric and acoustic guitar, clarinet, brass and percussion instruments. School band members perform at several venues each year and gain the priceless experience of designing, producing and marketing their own CD.
The school has adopted and developed the Virtues Program, promoting 50 ethics and values, which are also taught at Augusta Primary School and Margaret River Senior High School. This year MRPS is planning to incorporate solar power to reduce utilities costs and encourage the adoption of clean and sustainable power in the wider community.
In addition to the school’s very active P & C Association, MRPS receives superb sponsorship from local businesses, individuals and organisations, particularly through its fundraising website www.bonfire.westnet.com.au
