Getting there:
From Margaret River there are several ways of getting to the triangle.
- Brockman Highway:
Drive south on Bussell Highway and turn east
on Brockman Highway at Karridale. It’s a drive of just over 100km
and it should take you about 1.5hours.
- Mowen Road:
This is a partly unsealed road, at the Nannup end, but it is being progressively
sealed. Head south from Margaret River for about 5km and turn left into
Rosa Brook Road (at the nursery). Keep heading for Rosa Brook and drive
through the town and you are on Mowen Road. Be very careful of kangaroos,
especially early in the mornings and at dusk. Treat the unsealed sections
with care and respect, especially if you are not used to driving on gravel
roads.
- Vasse Highway:
Drive north to Busselton; take the bypass at Vasse and head for Perth. Vasse
Highway runs south a kilometre or so after the end of the bypass through
another roundabout. It is a similar distance and time to Brockman Highway,
but you get the chance to stop off at a fabulous sheep cheese factory.
Whichever of these routes you take you end up in Nannup and from there
you have the decision to make: Balingup or Bridgetown? Whichever way you
go you are about to start climbing the Darling escarpment with its wondrous
sharply undulating hills and breathtaking panoramas.
I always take the Balingup option because it is arguably the prettiest
road in the south west and I love cruising down the escarpment through
the piney woods back to Nannup on the return journey from Bridgetown.
These roads twist and wind and can be quite narrow in places, so take
care. The Balingup to Bridgetown road is actually the South Western Highway
and it carries many trucks, so again drive with care and patience; there
are bypass lanes.
